James Rosenquist

Rosenquist

1933 Grand Forks/North Dakota
- lebt und arbeitet in New York

James Rosenquist was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on 29 November 1933. In 1948 he won a scholarship from the Minneapolis School of Art, where he started his studies after Junior High School. After switching to the Minnesota University (1952-54) Rosenquist worked as a poster painter and designer to earn his living. In 1955 he received a scholarship of the Art Student's League in New York. There he also worked as a graphic artist, e.g. at the Times Square. In 1960 he quit this job and moved to a new surrounding. The following year he added the techniques and motifs of advertisement painting to his paintings. After the famous exhibition 'The New Realists' at the Sidney Janis Gallery in 1962 Rosenquist was able to show his paintings at the Museum of Modern Art as well as at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1963. During that time the first prints were executed. Ever since Rosenquist enlarged his technical abilities by experimenting with different materials. In 1964/65 he spent a longer period of time in Paris, Stockholm and Leningrad. In New York 'F-111', one of his most famous works for a one man show at Leo Castelli's gallery came into existence. Rosenquist took part in numerous international exhibitions, e. g. at the documenta in 1968. In 1972 a retrospective showed his works at the Wallraff-Richartz-Museum in Cologne, at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. In 1976 Rosenquist received the commission for a mural at the capitol of Tallahassee by the government of Florida, his chosen home. From 1978 he was appointed member of the National Committee for Art in Washington for six years. During the 1980s Rosenquist received further honours, but also developed his art further and produced the characteristic 'crosshatch mutation'-paintings, in which various motifs overlap in interlocked image areas. In 1992 he completed his graphic "Time Dust" being regarded as one of the world's biggest prints. His nearly always monumental works were collected by the most important museums and several retrospectives all over the world prove Rosenquist's popularity as well as his unfailing productivity. Today James Rosenquist lives and works in New York.
