Andrea del Sarto
Biography
On 16 July 1486 Andrea del Sarto (originally Andrea d'Agnolo di Francesco di Luca di Paolo del Migliore, an Italian painter, was born in Florence as the son of the tailor Angelo di Francesco, that is why he had the byname Sarto (=tailor). As a student of Piero di Cosimo, he was largely influenced by the great masters of the High Renaissance. In 1506 he and Franciabigio opened a joint studio. The artist painted his main works between 1508 and 1514, frescoes illustrating scenes from the life of Philippus Benizzi, "Adoration of the Magi" and "Nativity of the Virgin" and others. In 1511 Andrea del Sarto also painted a monochrome fresco of the Baptism of Christ for the Florentine Compagnia dello Scalzo. 1515 to 1526 he continued the life cycle of John, the Baptist. Andrea del Sarto's works are characterised by their fresh naturalness, the striving for diverse characterisation, cunning order and grouping, harmonious colouring and graceful depiction, combined with skillful drawing. Andrea del Sarto died in Florence on 22 Januar 1531 as an important painter of the Italian Renaissance.
