Biography
Anthony Caro counts among the most important representatives of English post war sculpting. Both as artist and teacher, Anthony Caro has had great influence on the development of sculpting in the United Kingdom.
Anthony Caro was born at New Malden, Surrey in 1924. He studied engineering in Cambridge (1942-1944) and sculpting at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1946 to 1952. During these years Anthony Caro focussed on Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Gothic sculpting.
Between 1951 and 1953 Anthony Caro was assistant in Henry Moore's studio. The work of his master had decisive influence on the young Anthony Caro, additionally, he was impressed by the art of Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning.
In 1953 Anthony Caro became lecturer at St. Martin's School of Art, where he was active until 1981. Among his illustrious circle of students were David Annesley, Richard Deacon, Barry Flanagan, Hamish Fulton, Gilbert & George, Peter Hide, Phillip King, Richard Long, Tim Scott and William Tucker.
In 1959/60 Anthony Caro went to New York on a scholarship and eventually abandoned figurative art and began making abstract steel sculptures. In the mid 1980s Anthony Caro picked up a style that must be seen as a continuation of his early period of creation.
In 1964 and 1968 Anthony Caro showed his works at the Kassel documenta exhibitions. In 1964 he had his first solo show at the New Yorker André Emmerich Gallery, in 1969 a retrospective at the London Hayward Gallery honored the sculptor. Another grand retrospective followed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1975, as traveling exhibition it was also shown at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston and the Museum of Fine Art in Boston.
Anthony Caro has received numerous prizes, his works are in possession of the world's most renowned museums. The artist lives and works in London.
