Don Eddy
Biography
Don Eddy, one of the key figures of American Photorealism and world-famous as "Car Painter", was born at Long Beach in California in 1944.
At first Don Eddy studied at Fullerton Junior College as of 1965, later he enrolled at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and finally in Santa Barbara at the University of California. This was also where Don Eddy worked as a lecturer from 1972 on. Additionally, he had several lectureships at New York University.
The year 1972 was decisive for Don Eddy: He participated in the legendary Kassel Documenta 5. Together with other representatives of this style, the artists made for remarkable acknowledgement of Photorealism by the art scene.
After an early period of creation that still followed Pop-Art, Don Eddy proved to be a first-rate photorealist as of the 1970s. His astonishingly realistic pictures of automobiles laid the basis for his sustainable fame. Don Eddy‘s works comprise detail views of shiny bumpers as well as larger scenes, for instance the "Parking Lot Pictures" with vehicles behind mesh wire fences or the "Showroom Windows", in which reflections of display windows superimpose the automobiles in an artful and confusing manner. In doing so, Don Eddy always seeks to employ the greatest technical challenges – depicting brilliance, reflections, light effects and surface structures.
He soon increased his range of themes: Still in the 1970s he created colorful pictures of display windows, and took a turn towards Surrealism as of the mid 1980s. His later works are dominated by landscapes perceived in an exaggerated and highly realistic manner, at times almost reaching religious realms.
Don Eddy's works are on display in numerous renowned museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York or the Museum of Modern Art, the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, the Israel Museum in Tel Aviv or the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogota/Columbia.
Don Eddy lives and works in his adopted hometown New York.
