Fritz Overbeck
1869 Bremen
1909 Bröcken
The German painter Fritz Overbeck (specifically August Friedrich Overbeck) was born on September 15, 1869 in Bremen. After finishing school, Overbeck studied at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf from 1889 until 1893. Through his acquaintanceship with Otto Modersohn, Overbeck found his way to the art colony of Worpswede. There he created primarily paintings of desolate moorlands. In 1897, Overbeck married his student Hermine Rothe, with whom he lived in Worpswede until 1905. The growing numbers of visitors to the colony induced the couple to move away from Worpswede. They relocated to Bröcken bei Vegesack, near Bremen. There he specialized in paintings of the beaches and dunes of the landscapes of the islands of the North Sea. Fritz Overbeck died on June 7, 1909 in Bröcken.
