Hans Burgkmair was born in 1472 in Augsburg. He received instruction in the fine arts from his father and later from Albrecht Dürer. Burgkmair's paintings have a highly particular character of worth and greatness. He was an extraordinarily productive artist, and it is likely to be a long time before all of his works are known. He also produced the drawings for over 700 woodcuts. Burgkmair died in Augsburg in 1559.
