Hartmann Schedel
Biography
Hartmann Schedel, (1440-1514) a doctor and humanist raised in Nuremberg, initially concentrated on liberal arts. In 1463, in company of the humanist Petrus Lader, he went to Padua in order to study medicine, Italian, Greek and Hebrew. As a doctor of medicine, Schedel returned to Nuremberg. In the 1480s Schedel settled in Nuremberg for good. Schedel was a prominent member of the Nürnberger Humanistenkreis, the circle of humanists in Nuremberg. Other members were Pirckheimer, Hieronymus Münster and Konrad Celtis. The humanist became famous with his Schedelsche Weltchronik. Among the magnificent illustrations there were many illustrations of towns which were of special interest because these were not just invented illustrations of German towns but also authentic ones.
