Herman Uhde-Bernays
Biography
The Germanist and art historian Hermann Uhde-Bernays (also Hermann Hans Friedrich) was born on October 31, 1875, in Weimar. He attended the Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Munich. As his stepfather sparked his interest in the works of Shakespeare, he discovered a passion for literature and art. He then began studying German literature and art history at the universities in Munich, Berlin, and Heidelberg. In 1900, he received his doctorate. From 1901 until 1903, he received practical training as an assistent at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. After Uhde-Bernays spent two years on educational journeys, he began working as a professional art historian in Munich in 1905. His monograph on Carl Spitzweg appeared in 1913. He was named Imperial Bavarian Professor in 1914. From 1937 to 1945, he was forbidden to write by the Nazi regime. From 1946 until his retirement, he was an honorary professor for newer German literaure in Munich. Numerous publications followed in this time. Hermann Uhde-Bernays died in 1965.
