With his major work 'Oculus artificialis teledriopticus sive telescopium' (first edition Nuremberg 1685) Johan Zahn (1631-1707) who worked as a canon at the Premonstratensian Monastery in Wurzburg, authored one of the first comprehensive descriptions on the functioning and application of optical instruments. With the help of magnificent engravings his work explains among other things the Camera obscura as well as the functioning of the first telescopes and microscopes. The work includes numerous images of the significant sun and lunar maps by Cherubini.
