Johannes Kepler

1571 Weil
1630 Regensburg

Johannes Kepler, an astronomer and mathematician, was born in Weil (Wurtemberg) on 27 December 1571. In 1589 Kepler began to study at the Swabian University of Tubingen. Kepler received a master's degree in August 1591. From March 1594 onwards the scientist lectured at the University of Graz. In 1596 Kepler's Mysterium cosmographicum (The Sacred Mystery of the Cosmos) was published. In his work De Stella Martis (1609) Kepler addressed the gravity between the earth and the moon and proved the influence the moon has on the tides. In 1611 Johannes Kepler invented the astronomic telescope, called the Kepler telescope. In 1627, after a long period of procrastination his Tabulae Rudolphinae was printed. His last work is an utopian depiction of life on the moon (Somnium seu astronomia lunaris, 1634). Johannes Kepler died in Regensburg on 15 November 1630.
