Juan José Barberá
Biography
Juan José Barberá Zamora, the artist's full name, was born at Valencia in 1954. He is one of the most important figures of new Spanish figurative art since the 1980s.
Juan José Barberá completed his education in his hometown, initially at the arts and trade school and then at the San Carlos Academy of Arts. Additionally, he was taught in fresco painting at San Cugat del Vallés.
In the early 1980s the career of Juan José Barberá Zamora gained momentum: His hometown awarded him the Senyera-Prize for painting (1980), in 1981 he won first prize in the 2nd National Painting Competition at the town of Algemesí. On a scholarship from the Valencia City Administration Juan José Barberá he worked at Casa de Velázquez in Madrid.
Juan José Barberá Zamora counts among the most innovative artists which revived figuration in the 1980s. This epoch's big keyword Postmodernism is also a suitable phrase to characterize works by Juan José Barberá.
As far as his art is concerned Juan José Barberá counts among the most versatile Spanish artists of his generation. He consistently experiments with new techniques, and again and again Juan José Barberá uses his art to ask new questions. His works are close to Trans Avant-garde and Neo-expressionism and convince with their strong stroke of the brush, a well-though-out coloring and at times subtle references, as they are typical for the "postmodern" generation. In his later works Juan José Barberá shows a tendency towards a surreal complex figuration.
Juan José Barberá Zamora lives and works in Valencia.
