After a training as a drawer and lithograph between 1948 and 1952, Brodwolf travelled to Paris in 1953, where he autodidactically attempted first abstract paintings and contacted Informel. In 1954 he settled in Brienz and worked at first as a graphic artist and later as a restorer of medieval frescos. Since 1956 he mainly worked as a glass painter. These experiences were reflected in his drawings, paintings and sculptures. Since 1959 the figure dominated Brodwolf's creativity and became the characteristic trademark of his work. That year he discovered the so-called ‚Tubenfigur' [tube-figure], pressed out colour tubes with remains of colours and labels, which he remodelled into figures. In uncounted variations, it appeared at first in drawings, at the beginning of the 1970s in his sculptures and in 1975 in his object pictures. Brodwulf played in his works with various often unconventional materials, which to which he applied a new context in combination with the figure. Brodwolf's artistic success can be seen in his numerous exhibition and awards, which accompany his work since the 1970s. In 1976 he accepted a call by the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim und was appointed professor for sculptures at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart in 1982. Brodwolf strongly influenced his pupils and colleagues with his intensive dealing with the human figure and the relation between art and objects of daily use.
