Ludwig Achim von Arnim

1781 Berlin
1831 Schloss Wiepersdorf (Brandenburg)

Ludwig Achim von Arnim (specifically Carl Joachim Friedrich Ludwig Achim von Arnim) was born in January 1781 in Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg. Beginning in 1798, Ludwig Achim von Arnim studied law and mathematics in Halle an der Saale and in Göttingen. From 1801 until 1804, he undertook an educational journey through Europe with his brother, during which he met the poet Clemens Brentano. Together with Brentano, he published the four volume collection of folk songs "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" in Heidelberg from 1806 to 1808 and the important Romantic "Zeitung für Einsiedler" ("Journal for Settlers") in 1808. He married Brentano's sister, the writer Bettina von Arnim, in 1811 and had six children with her. As of 1809, Arnim lived in Berlin, where he worked on Heinrich von Kleist's "Berliner Abendblätter." During this time, he stayed in close contact with Prussian nationalists such as Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and Kleist. In Berlin in 1811, he also founded the political group "Deutsche Tischgesellschaft" (German Table-Society). He edited the Berlin daily "Der Preußische Correspondent" ("The Prussian Correspondent") from 1813 until 1814. Achim von Arnim returned to his castle manor Wiepersdorf in 1814. Though separated from the literary life of Berlin, he still participated with many articles and stories in newspapers, magazines, and almanacs, as well as his own independent publications. Ludwig Achim von Arnim is considered one of the chief representatives of Heidelberg Romanticism along with Clemens Brentano. Achim von Arnim died on January 21, 1835, in his birthplace of Wiepersdorf.
