Marc Newson
Biography
The Australian designer Marc Newson studied jewelry design and sculpture at the Sydney College of Art until 1984, then lived for several years in Tokyo, where he worked as a designer for Idée. The "Lockheed Lounge" daybed made Marc Newson famous worldwide. This sculptural piece of seat furniture was presented to the public at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney in 1986. Featuring a core of polyester reinforced with fiberglass, the "Lockheed Lounge" is covered by a skin of riveted sheet aluminium, which makes it look like a vintage airplane although the forms are round and organic. From 1987 Marc Newson lived in Paris, where he specialized in watch design, founding the Ikepod Watch Company with Oliver Ike die Ikepod Watch Company; the watches were of high quality and made in Switzerland. Marc Newson continued to design furniture, in 1991 "Orgone", seat furniture for Cappellini. In 1994 Marc Newson designed the "Felt" armchair. The 1995 Marc Newson "Bucky" seat furniture for Fondation Cartier in Paris is equally anthropomorphic in appearance. In 1997 Marc Newson founded Marc Newson Ltd in London. Marc Newson is a visiting lecturer in design at the Sydney College of Art.
