Michelangelo Buonarroti
Biography
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born as the son of Lodoviko di Leonardo Buonarroto Simoni in Caprese, situated in today's province Aretzo in Italy, on 6 March, 1475. Michelangelo spent his childhood and youth in Florence. As early as in 1489 Michelangelo started an apprenticeship as a sculptor under the patronage of the Patrician Lorenzo Magnifico. From 1502 to 1504 Michelangelo created the famous marble sculpture "David" which today can be seen at the Galleria dell' Accademia in Florence. After a short stay in Bologna, Michelangelo Buonarroti returned to Rome in 1508 in order to create the ceiling fresco of the Sixtine Chapel. From 1512, Michelangelo carried out different artistic orders between Florence and Rome. Until 1541 the artist painted "The Last Judgement", a supplement to his fresco in the Sixtine Chapel. In 1547 Michelangelo Buonarroti was appointed architect for life for the construction of the St. Peter's Basilica. The artist died in Rome on 18 February, 1854.
