Nelly Sachs
Biography
The writer and lyricist Nelly Sachs, originally named Leonie Sachs, was born in Berlin-Schöneberg on 10 December, 1891. She wrote her first poems in the style of literary impressionism when she was 17 years old. During the 1930s Sachs's works dealt with the growing fascism in Germany and her Jewish roots. The Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf helped Nelly Sachs and her mother to emigrate to Sweden. After her mother's death in 1950, Nelly wrote poems dealing with this. Two years later she obtained Swedish citizenship. In 1966 the writer won the Noble Prize for Literature with her Israeli colleague Samuel Josef Agnon. She died in Stockholm on 12 May, 1970.
