Neo Rauch was born in Leipzig on 18 April, 1960. He was raised by his grandparents in Aschersleben since his parents died during a train accident shortly after his birth. The artist started to study art at the Hochschule für Grafik und Kunst in Leipzig in 1981. His initial tutor was Arno Rink, after 1986 he became a Meisterschüler (master student) of Professor Bernhard Heisig. The artist is considered to be a leading figure of the "Neue Leipziger Schule" (New Leipzig School). The Leipziger Hochschule appointed Rauch professor for painting in 2005 as the successor of his former professor Arno Rink. Leo Rauch - with his wife Rosa Loy - lives and works in a mill near Leipzig (Plattwitz).
