Neue Sachlichkeit

With their objective and precise rendition of reality, artists of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) mostly depicted scenes of life in the big city and of industrial workers. Shunned subjects such as scenes of cripples, people living in misery and prostitutes characterised their pictures. In cities such as Berlin and Dresden painters like Otto Dix, George Grosz, Christian Schad or Franz Radziwill shaped a rather veristic version of Neue Sachlichkeit with social and sociocritial components. In Munich and Karlsruhe a rather neoclassical and idyllic type of Neue Sachlichkeit was predominant. The leading figures were among others Georg Schrimpf, Alexander Kanoldt or Anton Räderscheit. When the national socialists came into power in 1933 the development of Neue Sachlichkeit ended abruptly. Artist of Neue Sachlichkeit were considered to be degenerate.
