The Italian designer Paolo Lomazzi was born in Milan in 1936. He studied at Milan Polytechnic, where he met Gionatan De Pas and Donato D'Urbino, until 1966. In 1966 the three founded a practice as the designer trio De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi in Milan. De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi became famous overnight in 1967 for "Blow", an inflatable armchair made of PVC film they designed for Zanotta. The trio then designed several unconventional seating objects, which, informed as they are by the spirit of radical or anti-design, represent a radical departure from traditional notions of seat furniture and lifestyle. In 1970 Paolo Lomazzi, De Pas, and D'Urbino designed "Joe" for Poltronova, an armchair intended as a tribute to the American baseball player Joe DiMaggio so it is in the shape of an outsize baseball glove. Both seating objects are Pop culture icons. The "Sciangai" clothes stand was designed by De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi for Zanotta in 1973. It looks like a bunch of giant chopsticks set upright; tongue-in-cheek irony is characteristic of virtually all De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi designs. The trio developed designer objects for Artemide, Alessi, Cassina, Driade, Poltronova, Stilnovo,Valenti, Zerodisegno, Koizumi, Disform, and others. Donato D'Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi continued to run the practice when Gionatan De Pas died in 1991. D'Urbino/Lomazzi have designed a great many other furniture objects, such as the "Nuvola" (1992 for Zanotta) bed, "Rosa del Deserto" (1994 for Tonelli), a table with a segmented glass top, and "Nessie", a serpentine pendent lamp (1996 for Lumina Italia).
