Philipp Franz von Siebold
Biography
Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), the son of a family of scholars from Würzburg, studied medicine and sciences in his hometown. As a sanitary officer of the Netherlands, Siebold went to Batavia in 1822 and, accompanied by a legation, went to Japan in 1823. Expelled from Japan for suspicions of espionage, he returned to the Netherlands where he started the Botanischer Garten (botanical garden) and the first ethnographic museum in Leiden. In 1842 he was ennobled. In 1859 Siebold finally went to Japan for a second time and in 1861 worked for the Shogun who helped him to introduce European sciences in Japan. In 1862 he returned to Europe and spent the biggest part of his remaining years in Würzburg.
