Publius Ovidius Naso

The poet Publius Ovidius Naso was born in Sulmo, today Sulmona, near Rome on 20 March 43 BC. He came from the old Italian gentry. At first Ovid engaged in a career as a civil servant but later stopped it and turned to poetry. Love took center stage in Ovid's works. He created numerous works such as "Amores"(love poems), "Ars amatoria" (didactic poems on the art of love) and "Remedia amoris" (antidotes to love). In the year 8 AD the poet was banished to Tomis (today in Constanta) at the Black Sea by an imperial edict without trial. His eulogy for Augustus and Tiberius did not lead to the pardoning he so much longed for. Ovid presumably died after 17 AD or later in exile in Tomis.
