Sergio Asti
Biography
Sergio Asti was an architect, interior decorator, and industrial designer. He designed furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, and electrical appliances for Artemide, Arteluce, Brionvega, Candle, Kartell, Knoll International, Martinelli Luce, Poltronova, Salviati, and Venini, etc. Sergio Asti studied art and architecture at Milan Polytechnic from 1947 to 1953 and then opened a practice in Milan in 1953. In 1956 Sergio Asti was a founding member of the ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale: Italian Industrial Design Association). To realize his designs, Sergio Asti began experimenting with plastic early in his career but retained a preference for such noble materials as glass, ceramics, and marble. In the 1950s Sergio Asti designed several lamps of acrylic resin for Kartell; in 1968 Martinelli Luce produced the Sergio Asti fiber glass lamp "Profiterole". In 1969 Sergio Asti designed "Daruma", a lamp of handblown glass made in six different sizes, for Candle, a Milan company. Another 1969 Sergio Asti design was "Navy", a folding chair; in 1972 Sergio Asti designed "Ruota", a glazed pottery vase, for Kartell. Sergio Asti won the coveted Compasso d'Oro award in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1962, and 1970; one of his award-winning designs was "Marco", a glass vase Sergio Asti designed for Salviati (1962). Sergio Asti's designer objects are viewed as epitomizing the beautiful form and organic design produced in postwar Italy.
