Théo Kerg was born on June 2, 1909, in Niederkorn, Luxembourg. In 1929, Kerg went to Paris to study at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1932, he became a student of Paul Klee at the art academy in Düsseldorf. There Kerg met his life long friend and fellow Klee student August Preuße. He exhibited his abstract paintings in Luxembourg in December 1933. Kerg became a member of the group Abstraction-Création. Before emigrating to southern France at the end of 1942, Kerg taught art education at the industry and trade school in Esch-Alzette, Luxembourg. On the occassion of the World's Fair in New York in 1939, Kerg, along with Thill and Jungblut, designed a large frescoe on commission from the government of Luxembourg. In 1941, he was professor of art education at the industry and trade school in Luxembourg city. In France, Kerg presented mainly new lithographs in various exhibitions after 1945. Kerg followed his appointment to the art school in Kassel in 1957 and worked there as a guest professor until 1965. With his late works, Kerg achieved international fame. Kerg died on March 4, 1993, in Chissey en Morvan near Autun (Bourgogne).
