William Curtis
Biography
William Curtis, born in Alston in 1746, died in Brompton in 1799 - initially was a pharmacist before focusing on botany. Alongside the richly illustrated Flora Londiniensis, Curtis's most famous works include the Practical Observations on the British Grasses and Lectures on Botany. William Curtis has been particularly famous as the founder of the Botanical Magazine, or Flower-Garden Displayed (since 1787).
