"Seine bedeutendste Entwicklung ist eine trommelförmige Rechenmaschine für die vier Grundrechenarten. Sie wurde nach seinen Entwürfen angefertigt und am 24./25.6.1784 in Anwesenheit Lichtenbergs der Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften in Göttingen vorgeführt." (NDB XVIII, 313f.). - "Klipstein's book is quite rare, perhaps an indication that it was not widely circulated in his own day. It is notable, for example, that Charles Babbage (who had a collection of books on all aspects of calculation) was unaware of its existence until his friend John Herschel brought him a copy that he had found on a trip to the Continent. It would appear that no one answered Müller’s plea for financial support and that nothing came of this idea until Babbage independently thought of it about thirty-five years later. It is purely conjectural to wonder whether nobody was actually interested in such a device at the time or whether the limited circulation of Klipstein’s book did not bring it to the attention of the appropriate people."
