On the occasion of Picasso's 90th birthday, the most important contemporary painters, graphic artists, and sculptors have joined forces to create the graphic work “Hommage à Picasso.” More than fifty artists accepted the challenge of contributing a print to honor Picasso. The artists can be divided into two categories: those who pay tribute to Picasso within the familiar context of their own work, and those who deliberately, and sometimes critically, engage with his motifs, themes, and stylistic devices. Picasso, at the time ninety years old, followed the project with great interest, but did not live to see its completion. “Hommage à Picasso,” planned as a birthday salute, became a farewell to the extraordinary artist.
