Landgerichts Direktor Schiefler. 1921.
India ink brush and Watercolour.
Signed and dated lower right, titled lower left. On delicate Japon. 38 : 33,5 cm (14,9 : 13,1 in), size of sheet. Martha Hegemann, wife of the painter Anton Räderscheidt, was at first a member of the group that styled itself “Stupid”, co-founded by Heinrich Hoerle, Franz Wilhelm Seiwert, Räderscheidt and others. She distanced herself from the “Cologne Progressives” and sought to develop a pictorial language of her own. The paintings and watercolours she subsequently produced show a confluence of reality and dream. Animals, mundane utilitarian objects and fragmentary landscapes from a wide variety of semantic contexts are juxtaposed, often evoking disconcertingly absurd impressions. Martha Hegemann’s works are reminiscent of jigsaw puzzles, which the viewer can only read when they have been assembled and, therefore, decoded. [KD]

With soft ripples. With isolated squeeze marks and small brown stains, more obvious in the upper half of the image. Corners minimally rubbed.
