Object. Elastic cord and lacquered wire.
23,5 x 47 x 0,4 cm (9,2 x 18,5 x 0,1 in)
Because of the elastic cord the outline becomes variable, it does not have a permanent shape. It is particularly this non-permanent shape, the diffuse form and its relation to the surrounding space that Fred Sandback is interested in. By minimal means the relation between space and sculpture is on and off picked out as a central theme in his work.
Paul Wember (1947 - 1976), director of the Kaiser-Wilhelm Museum, Krefeld, and the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, takes on the travelling exhibition "Live in Your Head - When Attitudes Become Form" (9 May - 15 June 1969) in the Museum Haus Lange and soon after orgamized the single exhibition "Fred Sandback - Installations" (6 July - 24 August 1969). It was through his commitment that Minimal Art, which had previously only been on exhibition in gallerys, was now accepted by Germany's conservative cultural scene.
The handwritten documenation of the work and the proof of handing over to Paul Wember cannot be found in the estate. The Estate Fred Sandback will not issue a duplicate.
The fact that the work was in the Haus Lange for some time is documented by the Estate Fred Sandback. [EH].
