PROVENANCE: Private collection southern Germany.
In terms of form, the work calls reminiscence of the gestures of the depiction of Saint Jerome in the painting of the same name by Leonardo da Vincis from 1480, which today is in possession of the Pinacoteca Vaticana. The figure's buoyancy is stressed even stronger by the untreated parts of the image's surface. The work is good proof of Lambert Maria Wintersberger's artistic talents. At the time this work was made the artist's uvre was in a state of recommencement, after a period dominated by a very clinical style, the artist's powerful and spontaneous stroke of the brush becomes obvious in this work.
