One year before this watercolor was made, Feininger had relocated from Weimar to Dessau with the Bauhaus, however, he did not take on a teaching post in the new facility. Feininger organized his life in a summer term he spent on the Baltic Sea and a winter term he spent in Dessau. Just as the years before, Feininger spent the summer of 1928 in Deep (Mrzezyno) at the mouth of the river Rega in Pomerania. The Baltic Sea inspired Feininger to a number of atmospheric pictures with beach-, sea- and sailing motifs. With graphic-like strokes of the feather Feininger captured the atmosphere of a summer evening in his unmistakable manner. His pictures from those days emanate a special calmness, which can also be found in our work. The calm sea with the small crinkly waves that reflect the light of the setting sun and a sailing boat at the horizon that smoothly glides through the waves, emphasize the peace at the end of the day.
