PROVENANCE: From artist's estate.

In 1904 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner started doing woodcuts. He used wood that was cut longitudinally to take advantage of the long grain, drawing on a wide variety of woods and later in Switzerland larch as well. Most motifs which the artist himself printed by hand were issued in tiny editions of from 5 to 7 prints. They only differ from one another in the irregularities of the imprint caused by the folding-knife. These difference in the prints were, however, not necessarily coincidental but were in part intended by Kirchner as variations. [DP]
