Schmidt-Rottluff‘s watercolors from the forties and fifties of the last century are characterized by a strong conciseness of the India ink drawing, that, supported by a rich coloring, adds an almost painting-like appearance to the watercolors. The formal beauty of simple objects of everyday use always inspired Karl Schmidt-Rottluff to very special composition. Their Cubist arrangement hints at the architect in Schmidt-Rottluff, which he had initially wanted to be.
