Delteil 31. Stella 31. One of 100 copies. On laid paper by Ingres (with watermark "MBM (France) - Ingres d'Arches"). 32 x 26,4 cm (12,5 x 10,3 in). Sheet: 62,5 x 47,7 cm (24,6 x 18,9 in).
Made for "L'Album d'estampes originales de la Galerie Vollard", which Ambroise Vollard had planned to make but never realized. Colors vary within edition. The graceful portrait shows Renoir's second son Jean.
Our sheet is one of Renoir’s finest lithographs in colors and at the same time one of the most gracious children portraits found in French graphic art of the late 19\up5 th century. Renoir, who executed this work in an extremely soft pen, created a new type of childrens portrait with this picture of his son, a style that would decisively influence children's book illustration.
