Badende am Strand. 1909.
Color Pastel.
Signed and dated lower left. On firm creme wove paper. 12 x 18.5 cm (4.7 x 7.2 in). the full sheet. [KD].
Liebermann presumably made this pastel in the sea resort Noordwijk aan Zee, it sems that it was made in preparation of the oil painting "Badende Knaben" (Eberle 1909/10), today in possession of the Kunsthaus Zürich. [KD].
Small pastel study, remarkably appealing for its color value.
This work's authenticity has kindly been confirmed by Drs. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin. We are grateful for her expert advice.

PROVENANCE: Private collection U.S.A.

His sojourns at the North Sea had a special impact on Max Liebermann's painting, as a large part of his oeuvre is dedicated to the summery ado on the beaches. In this case the pastel, which Max Liebermann preferably rendered in small formats, is a welcome means of a spontaneous artistic expression. The large amount of studies of bathers, among them several in oil and some graphic works, may not all have been executed plein-air, however, they breath the air of a light-flooded summer at the sea, as Max Liebermann captured it with great poise and scarce means.
