PROVENANCE: Private collection Berlin.

The spontaneous panache, which made his works from before World War I so exciting, can be found in many watercolors from the 1920s as well. Compact forms show a sense of standardization that made for the tenor of his works from the expressionist era. Erich Heckel's special feel for a striking composition is traceable in the arrangement of this landscape. The chalk drawing for this watercolor seems to have been made plein-air, the watercolors were added at a later point, as this explains the notes for the colors that Heckel wrote into the composition. They smoothly blend in with the composition and can be seen only upon a closer look.
