Small spirited landscape study.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Baden-Württemberg.

The landscape at the foothills of the Alps around Murnau, the artist's residence, was both a source of inspiration as well as a force that had decisive influence on her style. Gabriele Münter captured the motif with a swift stroke of the brush forming the characteristic landscape, which had become her second home, in a subdued coloring. The constriction to just a few forms framed by a strong stroke of the brush is owed to an intensive occupation with reverse-glass painting that Münter had discovered for herself upon her first visits to the Alpine region. Clear color fields arrange the landscape study which entirely does without any detailed interior drawing. The versatile idea of the landscape, which Gabriele Münter had left behind with her oeuvre, is a document of an intense occupation with what she was surrounded by.
