We are grateful to Alexander Pechstein for his kind expert advice.
Easy, colorful drawing of great expressiveness.

PROVENANCE: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia.

Despite all deprivations that Pechstein and his colleagues had to put up with due to their bad financial situation, festivities like fancy dress parties were still organized. The easy drawing with its rather swift coloring seems to have been executed in a hurry, which makes it a document of one of these masked balls. The young Charlotte Kaprolat, who married Max Pechstein the following year, may have been his model for this drawing. Pechstein, who had portrayed her many times, usually made her look a little older than she actually was. In this color chalk drawing a more mature woman seems to hide behind the mask. The easy line management and the quickly added color chalk strokes hint at a spontaneous work that Max Pechstein made in a state of momentary enthusiasm for the masquerade.
