Günther Uecker's work "Verletzungen" (Injuries) is a prime example of his artistic message. The nails, treated with the ax and hammered into the canvas document the artist's spontaneous and intuitive process of creation. Uecker beats the nail structure that protrudes over the painted image carrier in a staccato of strokes. The rapid repetition of the hits symbolizes the "Verletzung" and calls reminiscence of the crucifixion of Christ. In this context the work generates aesthetic associations with pain. To Uecker the nailing makes for a dialog, a direct combination of both aspects: the injury, the infliction of wounds and the process of healing, in which the nails have a protective effect and protect the interior from the exterior. They document the ambiguity that is characteristic of the conception of Uecker's oeuvre.
