LITERATURE: Fritz Löffler, Otto Dix. Leben und Werk. Vienna/Munich 1967, plate 188, with full-page illu.

After the war Otto Dix abandoned the old-masterly glazing technique, which he had applied in the years of repression under the National Socialists. The feeling of a newly gained freedom to give expression to his artistic will and to create works from a new perspective are the main keywords under which his later period of creation must be seen. A free painting style, entirely perceived from the colors, becomes characteristic and his motifs also change. The still life, which Dix had not taken into account much until then, becomes part of his circle of subjects. Fritz Löffler wrote as follows: "The flowers, which used to be only accesory parts in the picture, beginning with 'Iris mit Disteln', in the work 'Gelben Iris' and the 'Sonnenblumen im Atelierfenster' all the way to 'Disteln und Schmetterlingen' from 1955, began to develop an independent existence. The large brown and golden sunflower gained importance in paintings and graphic works from these days" (quote after: Fritz Löffler, Otto Dix. Leben und Werk, Vienna/Munich 1967, p. 122)
