"The vast bulk of my most successful things came into existence almost without needing to think about it, quick and without corrections."
A. Hoberg, G. Münter in München und Murnau 1901-14, Munich 1992, p. 32.

This unusual study, entirely eluding from any sort of narrative interpretation, may well have come into existence during the first months after the emigration to Sweden. It was a time in which Münter, presumably under the influence of Kandinsky, was occupied with non-representational compositions. It is important to mention that she never clearly pursued this genre. Gabriele Münter‘s abstract works are not very well known for no good reason. The first abstract pictures in her oeuvre were made as of 1910, however, unlike it was the case with the abstract works from Kandinsky, they were not sufficiently valued. She named these works "indefinable form- and color studies without objects" or just "small pictures".
