Herabhängender Zweig mit roten und grünen Tomaten. 1906.
Watercolor.
Monogrammed and dated lower right. Lower right corner with a pen drawing in sepia, presumably by a hand other than that of the artist. On firm laid paper. 36.7 x 25.8 cm (14.4 x 10.1 in), the full sheet.
Verso with another watercolor: Päonien. [JA].

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the estate Christian Rohlfs, Hagen, from 24 August, 2008 (in copy). The work is registered with the number CR 430.

PROVENANCE: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia
Private collection Southern Germany.

Owed to the firm brushstroke, the watercolor appears more drawn than painted. For its early date it can be considered one of first works from the artist's late period of creation. While the discarded composition on verso still is a lot more pictorial, Rohlfs delivers proof of a poise that will be charactereistic of his art until the end of his life.
