Emil Nolde interpreted the marsh landscape he was surrounded by in many atmospheric moments. He was passionate about the high skys above the vast land. Time and again Nolde depicted the remarkable blaze of colors that cloud formations in northern regions offer. His interpretations of the barren marsh landscape delivers account of the great admiration for this weather phenomenon, which occupies a key position in his works. At the same time Nolde hints at the secrets the landscape has to offer, which, despite its austere atmosphere, is the realm of mythical creaturs and trolls that walk abroad in darkness. Emil Nolde traced these inexplicable phenomena and rendered them with his very own emphasis. [KD]
