Lot description
Die Windmühle im Park Sanssouci in Potsdam. Um 1850.
Watercolors over Pencil drawing.
Lower right illegibly inscribed "A..". On thin board. 7.6 x 11.9 cm (2.9 x 4.6 in) , almost the full sheet. [CB].

The drawing shows a view of the historic windmill in Park Sanssouci, Potsdam, just a few meters west of the palace. Frederick William II of Prussia had the smock mill erected in the northern part of the park between 1787 and 1791. The palace's colonnades can be identified in left, the new chambers - with the striking eagle - in right. The pergola around the mill was added around the middle of the 19th century. The small format and the partly swift execution suggest that this is an album leaf, a form quite popular in those days. The unknown artist presumably comes from the Berlin/Potsdam circle around Carl Graeb (1816-1884) who made numerous similar views of Potsdam and Park Sanssouci.

Paper slightly discolored and with faint traces of sunning. Minimally stained in places and with small waterstain in upper left. Corners with tiny pinholes. All in all in good condition.
