"Most of my best pieces came into existence quick and without corrections."
A. Hoberg, G. Münter in München und Murnau 1901-14, Munich 1992, p. 32

Owed to her consolidated situation, inner peace and a personal liberation, the artist made a large number of renowned works in Murnau. These works demonstrated Münter's artistic breakthrough and the newly discovered means of expression. During this decisive creative period Gabriele Münter also created this work "Kirchgarten in Murnau". While staying in Kochel in 1909, she was painting, together with Kandinsky, on the local churchyard in wintertime. While the crosses in this work are just fragmentary rendered, she opens up the full view onto the mountains in this work. The grave in the foreground, executed in a strong red, sets a striking accent. A blue tombstone margins the composition in right. Gabriele Münter exquisitely captured the atmosphere of the rural churchyard in this work. [EH]
