After he had moved to Lake Constance and in context of the enforced withdrawal, Dix discovered new subjects. Otto Dix focused on the landscape of the lake region. In his analysis of the landscape he applied the same tenacity as it was the case with his earlier portraits. Initially in a meticulous manner in the style of Cranach, Altdorfer and other masters of the Donau School, Dix attained a more liberal conception over the time. In his landscapes he did not only emphasize the topography. The colors of this landscape are particularly expressive. With works like this Otto Dix redefined landscape painting of this era.
