The artist was invited to show his works at Documenta II in Kassel in 1959, a year later he attended the Villa Massimo in Rome for a year on a scholarship. It was in those days that the scriptural element gained in importance, the gestural and spontaneous character of earlier days gave way to conceptual compositions. The fine large-size sheet from 1960 was made in the early days of this new period in Gerhard Hoehme's creation which eventually led to the 'Briefbilder' (Letter Pictures). The same year Hoehme began to teach at the Duesseldorf Art Academy, a post he held until 1984.
