PROVENANCE: Private collection Germany (acquired directly from the artist).

Otto Piene's works are most of all characterized by his eagerness to experiment and the interest in ever new means of creation. For his art Piene often used natural elements such as fire and smoke which he employs in the process of artistic creation with great poise. The blisters of paint and the crustifications in the work offered here are result of a short combustive process through which the paint coagulates. The picture's structure is fixated after the fire has been extinguished. Accordingly, the work is a document of the interplay of nature's independent growth and Piene's controlled artistic intrusion. The contrast of the dark background and the lucent explosion of colors in the foreground additionally emphasizes this synthesis and visualizes the process of creation.
