During their relationship Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky visited Rapallo on several occasions. In those days shemainly executed small-format landscapes that marked the Münter's transition from a rather expressive duct to her very own and independent style. This landscape is particularly captivating for its sophisticated color application, mostly in spatula technique, in which she had already gained refinement by that time. The duct had become calmer, the colors more isolated, their effect is already partly based on unmixed nuances.The rather calm arrangement of the water surface in the foreground shows Münter's intention to add spatial depth to the landscape. The picture is illuminated by the yellow-ocher tonality of the house, which makes for a strong presence and depth effect. This picture shows Gabriele Münter as an artist that is about to leave the beaten paths of painting, still a little hesitant but clearly determined, which is why this work must be considered one of the most important documents from her period of transition. Even though the artist still rendered this picture in a largely conventional manner, the composition, with its rich color fields placed side by side by means of the spatula, bears witness to a new thinking. Münter had already familiarized herself with the spatula technique in the painting class at Kandinsky's art school Phalanx, however, she rarely applied it. Now the artist attains a more lavish color application which would become characteristic of her own style in the following and determine her entire further creation.
