With the retreat to Seebüll Emil Nolde's choice of themes became increasingly focused on the things and landscapes he was surrounded by. His neatly kept flower garden and its abundance of blossoms was a rich source of inspiration for a remarkably large amount of watercolors that Nolde, just as it is the case in this work, combined with objects from his domestic surrounding. The main focus, however, is on the flowers, but not on their opulence, instead the artist sees them as individual objects with lucent colors. The intensity of the watercolors, owed to an intimate liaison with the Japan paper, determines the expressiveness of these works. With these watercolors Emil Nolde created a new type of flower still life characterized by an effect almost entirely based on the color's expressiveness. Botanically hard to define, they display a world of a deep passion for the aesthetic value of form and color. [KD]
