Working in spatula technique is what Gabriele Münter's early works had in common with those from Wassily Kandinsky. The samll-size ready-made cardboards allowed working plein-air. These works are characterized by a swift account of a landscape impression. In thos days both Kandinsky and Münter spontaneously applied the pastose paint with quick spatula strokes. The result is a landscape without any sort of conception and well-thought-out interpretation. Gabriele Münter worked the landscape composition out of the paint, which makes for the special appeal of this impulsively rendered works, just as it was the case with Kandinsky's works from these days. The small picture shows a view from Kandinsky's and Münter's hotel room St. Georges in Tunis. Kandinsky also made a work with this view (cf. Roethel/Benjamin 132).
